Regina Carter (born August 6, 1966, Detroit, Michigan) is an American jazz violinist. Carter began as a classical violinist at the age of four, studying the Suzuki Method until she was nine. She is the cousin of famous jazz saxophonist James Carter. Carter attended Cass Technical High School with a close friend, jazz singer Carla Cook, who introduced her to the likes of Ella Fitzgerald. In high school, Carter performed with the Detroit Civic Orchestra, played in a pop-funk group named Brainstorm, and studied jazz with Marcus Belgrave.
